MAYA’S GO TO BOOK

In an interview with Maya Angelou – iconic author, poet, celebrity, and mentor to Oprah Winfrey and the nation – Oprah asks her:

“Where do you go to for solace, for comfort? Are there books that you read? When Maya Angelou needs comforting where does she turn?”

The one book Maya Angelou mentions in response is Lessons in Truth.

Lessons in Truth is the core text of Unity Ministry. Unity is a more than hundred year old healing and transformational movement still vibrantly alive all over the world. It is based on the integration of what its founders learned from rigorous study of religion, spirituality, philosophy and science. Especially influential were the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Mary Baker Eddy, Founder of Christian Science, and the Bible accounts of the healing miracles of Jesus Christ.

In the interview, Ms. Angelou tells about a powerful encounter with an early mentor who introduced her to Unity and its beliefs. This encounter happened in her twenties. Ms. Angelou is in her mid eighties as she recalls it during the interview with tears rolling down her cheeks.

If Maya Angelou turns to Lessons in Truth for solace and comfort, can solace and comfort be far behind for others who “seek” there as well?
