Gory. That word best describes the extreme physical and emotional abuse Dave Pelzer suffered at the hands of his alcoholic, mentally ill mother. Referring to her child as “It” rather than using his personal name, betrayed her view and treatment of him as less than human. Years of horrific, gory abuse would have destroyed almost anyone.
