Chicken Soup for the Soul - My Amazing Mom

101 Stories of Love and Appreciation by Amy Newmark

Today is Mother’s Day. Poet William Ross Wallace said it well: “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.”

In keeping with our mission of breaking the cycle of intergenerational incarceration we especially remember the women who are incarcerated.

According to a report prepared in collaboration with the ACLU’s Campaign for Smart Justice and referenced in the article “Women’s Mass Incarceration: The Whole Pie 2017” by Aleks Kajstura, 80% of women in jails are mothers. It is also commonly known that the educational level of the mother is one of the main predictors of whether her children will continue their education and become productive citizens or drop out of school and likely fall prey to gangs, early death or incarceration.

These sobering considerations continue to urge us on in our mission – as well as inform the design of our programs and materials and our commitment to disseminating them where they are most needed.

Might a mother you know – incarcerated or not – enjoy a helping of “Chicken Soup for A Mother’s Soul”? This book is available for purchase in the Resources section of our website.
